The Emigrated Eacotts

At one time it was not possible to leave the home county and move to another county without special permission. After that time movement became easier. The records however become more complex as to who came from where. When Eacotts moved abroad it became even more difficult to establish links.

The first record I have of an Eacott living outside of Britain was William Eycott (30) of Gloucester a mason who went with his wife to Jamaica in 1774.

In 1830 (US census) Richard Eacott was living at Stow Mass. and Michael was living at Hamburg NY.

In 1830 Charles, who was born in Wiltshire had taken up a crown land grant issued by Thomas Talbot in Lambton Co.Euphemia Twp, Ontario. He may have lived in USA for a time since Talbot made him swear an oath of allegiance. He married Margaret McCabe a settler from Ireland. He was mustered in 1837 as a militiaman.

William Eacott was living in Youngstown, Westmorland Co. Pa at the US census of 1840.

Isiac and his wife Eliza came to Ontario from Britain in 1845.

According to the 1850 census Catherine was living in Weston, Missouri, and Jane was living in Parkville Missouri, Maria was living in Brownville NY.

In 1880 Calib was camped on Rock Creek, Gunnison Colorado.

Eacotts arrived in Australia, at Mandurrah in Western Australia an Eacott arrived with his family in 1830 and settled there building a home which still exists. Others came to the eastern side of the country.

Some were believed to have settled in South Africa. At least two brothers were living in Argentina during the mid 1900's.

The Eacott Registry

During 1980 - 85 an attempt was made to locate as many Eacotts as possible. A listing of information is available elsewhere.

Points of Origin

From the evidence it appears that Eacott was derived from Eyot, which was also known as Eycot and Aicote. Eycot became or was parallel with Ekot or Ecot. The names all are intertwined in several small parishes adjacent to each other, Rendcomb, North Cerney, Bagendon, Colesbourne and Winstone. The names go back to the 1300's in association with these places.

Commencing with the late 1500's and early 1600's Eacott arises. This variant appears most closely connected with the version Ekott or Ecott and more limitedly with Eycott all are still with the same parishes. Just before 1700 the name in association with Ecott appears about Cromhall and appears regularly in several parishes south of Cromhall, most notably Alveston. At the same time the name as Eacutt, Eacott becomes known at South Cerney and later about Purton and adjacent parishes in Wiltshire. Elsewhere in Wiltshire a line of Eacotts occurs at Warminster in the early 1700's.

Likewise a small group appears in Berkshire, Surrey and London. Other Eacotts before 1800 are almost none existent in all other areas of Britain. Until 1800 nearly all the Eacotts lived in these few places. Notably, the Eacott variant never was strong in the places where the name first appeared.

Since 1800 a worldwide migration has taken place. By 1830 Eacotts were living in Canada and the United States. None were recorded in 1790 in the first US census. Charles Eacott settled in Ontario as a pioneer farmer in 1830. John Eakett was in Sharpsburg Maryland in 1810, Richard Eacott was in Stow Mass. in 1830 and Michael Eacott was in Hamburg NY in 1830. William was in Westmoreland co. PA in 1840. Maria was in Brownville NY in 1850. Catherine and Jane Eacott were in Platte county Missouri 1850.
