The Alerts options let you decide when you
want to be notified of a Caps or Num Lock change. You can also be
notified when you press the Insert key. Just check the boxes that
you want to be notified of.
NOTES:
- Windows toggles the Insert key status for each application
individually. It is not a system-wide toggle (as are Caps
and Num Lock).
- For example, Microsoft Word may have Insert toggled ON,
while WordPad has insert toggled OFF. Pressing the Insert
key in this situation will turn Insert OFF in Microsoft
Word, and will turn Insert ON in WordPad.
- Therefore, Toggler cannot alert you to when the Insert
status is being toggled - it can only alert to the fact that
it has been pressed.
- Toggler fixes a bug in Windows that allows the Insert key
to toggle on and off very quickly when you hold it down.
- To demonstrate this behaviour, start Microsoft Word
while Toggler is not running, note the Insert key status
by looking for OVR in the status bar, and then hold down
the toggle key for a few seconds. You should see the OVR
text in the status bar start to flicker as the Insert
mode is toggled on and off very quickly. Depending on
how long you hold the Insert key down, the OVR status
may or may not be present when you let go of the key.
This is obviously not the correct behaviour.
- Now, start Toggler, and try the experiment again. You
will notice that Toggler only allows the Insert key to
be pressed once. Therefore, no matter how long you hold
the key down, it will always do what you expect it to
do.
